Growing up we are told to brush and floss our teeth twice a day to maintain good oral hygiene. While this is excellent, there is still bacteria that needs to be professionally removed. Either through scaling, root planing or polishing most dentists recommend a cleaning at least two times a year. The reason for this, is that it allows your dentist at the check ups to spot possible problems before they need major treatment.
What is dental cleaning?
The goal is to remove plaque and calculus that builds up on our teeth and roots. Plaque is the sticky film we may feel on the outside surfaces of our teeth. It is full of bacteria that can lead to gum disease and cavities. During dental cleanings, we have specialized instruments that help remove this build up. After it is removed, the teeth are polished, and a fluoride treatment is used to strengthen and protect the teeth.
What is a check up?
Dental check ups usually consist of a visual and radiographic exam. The goal of the exam is to evaluate our teeth and gums. X-rays are taken as we cannot see the inside structures of our teeth with a visual exam alone.. At Sunridge Family Dental we use digital radiography helping limit the amount of radiation exposure.
